Humor to help us get through the Chacon trade, as posted in a comment in the last post

In fact, I'm surprised that he hasn't traded Helton yet. I mean, he was just batting near .300 when he got injured, and he had tons of power behind him all season, he's seen all kinds of great pitching. Oh, and there's no way he'll ever fully recover from, gasp, a strained muscle. Not to mention the fact that he's never been seriously injured before, so this one will hit him hard...hrm, now seems like a perfect time to trade him. Why, I'll bet we could get three or four Yankees prospects for him!

P.S. This was sarcasm.

Have you guys been watching the same Shawn Chacon that I've been watching since after the 2003 All-Star Break? We should be lucky we got anything for him, if you want to know the truth.

Are you nuts? Are you joking?

Know what his ERA is? It's freaking below 4.1 for pete's sake. The next best in the rotation is freaking 5.02, and JJ is out for the season. ERAs below 4.5 at Coors? They're like cows in India (hooray cultural reference).

Oh, and uh, despite Sam's outpour, thanks for the comment.

And, we have been watching Chacon since 2003 - one year he was wrongly forced into a closing roll in which he did not belong, and this year he's had no run support, none, which is why he's got a shotty record despite, as my cohort mentioned, a sub-4.1 ERA. Looks like you too have fallen ill with O'Down syndrome, looking only at wins and losses, especially when one year he was in the completely wrong spot, ie the pen. I wonder if O'Dowd factored Shawn's closing performance into his decision, actually. It would be pretty typical of Dealin Dan to consider Chacon's performance during his stay in the pen due to a wacked managerial move.

Since when did ERA become the be-all, end-all of pitcher evaluation? Hell, Denny Stark threw up a 4.00 ERA for the Rox in 2002. That alone should show that ERA is a completely unreliable stat.

All I can go by is what I've seen. And what I see in Chacon is a guy who throws pus (87-90 mph) with a curveball that only occasionally travels the required 60'6" - and even less often is a strike. I see a headcase who has made life difficult for the Rockies front office in the past. And I stand by my statement - we were lucky to get anything of even potential value for this guy.

And, 'wacked managerial move' or not, Chacon sucked as a closer and it had nothing to do with 'not belonging there' and everything to do with 'not being able to get big league hitters out' and 'not being able to throw a strike reliably'. That's just my $0.02, though. Maybe I am nuts.
